Poet Ronda Miller and artist Katie Wiggins teamed up with Kellogg Press to create I Love the Child/Amo al Niño, a "children's" book for all ages, celebrating the diversity of the child within all of us. The poem is written in both English and Spanish, with an illustration to accompany each child/stanza. This remarkable book finishes with a collection of favorite recipes from each child's past. THE IMAGES IN THIS LISTING ARE JUST A SAMPLING FROM THE BOOK.

The vision for I Love the Child, was to incorporate children from a variety of ages, ethnicities and abilities. The author and artist depict a non-traditional mermaid as a mixed race, gender neutral person with a partial limb rather than the traditional female mermaid with a perfect body and long red or blond hair. The girl in the wheelchair breaks the mold of being incapable by doing a wheelie. Most humans have experienced an emotion similar to one or more of the children depicted within the stanzas.

"...First, the size and feel of the book would make it easy to read to a small group of children. The illustrations beautifully matched the poem on the page. There was diversity of ethnicity, physical condition, and gender. The Spanish co-text should make it appealing to a wide range of children. We could identify characteristics of children we have raised and known, and think that older children could see themselves in some of these characters. We think the book could be used with a wide age range. The cooking section expands the number of activities that could be used with the book. This is a book that we would like to give to important young people in our lives." ~~~ Allison and Gary Haworth, Kansas Authors Club Reviewers
